My sugimori art is pretty damn rubbish; it's the shading and line art that I can't get.

Could somebody give me a few tips and pointers on the matter?

Here is an example.

It looks like a really good tutorial and looks like the style, so you could give it a go.
Yeah, you can't go wrong with Yayster's tutorial. Everyone knows how amazing she is at Sugi. :)
Hmm... She uses a different method... Hers is straight on the computer, but I need to do scans since all my works are done on paper first, so it just depends...

It also depends on what program you are using, and what tools are available. I would suggest using the Pen Tool for path creations in Photoshop as opposed to the line tool since you have better handling on the curves, especially when it comes to the really tight and tiny curves. Granted, the process of Pen Tool and paths does take much longer, but the results come out much better than just using the Line Tool.

When scanning, scan at 200 DPI on Grayscale. Trust me on this. It will be so much easier in the long run, unless you're using the blue and red lead. At which point, you would use 200 DPI on Color.

And another tip, BIG images are easier to work with than little images. All of mine clock anywhere from 1500 to 9500, allowing for best detail work, but keep in mind that the larger the image is, the slower your computer will get, unless it is able to handle something so big. Recommended image size to work with is 1500 to 2500. Anything bigger is mostly for background work and high details.

I've also left you some other tips on your page, so feel free to look at those also.
