tl;dr: fake pokeymans at bottom of post, view, crit, don't steal, enjoy. (Though I would like you to read the second paragraph, if nothing else.)
'lo, all. I like drawing, and I like scanning those drawings and pretending that I know how to color them in Photoshop. I've also liked creating fake Pokémon almost as long as I've liked Pokémon itself (1998, whoo, yeah, I'm old). I've created... oh, gosh, 400+ little buggers over the years, most of which are too laughably horrible to see the light of day, but lately I've developed quite an obsession with creating even more, revamping my better ideas and drawing them all. Fakes are pretty much all I've been able to draw for the last few months. Whether that is good or bad remains to be seen, but eh.
Before we get started, let me say this: the one thing I absolutely do NOT want to hear as a comment is anything along the lines of "but Grass-type starters are always reptiles!" or anything similar about any of the designs I post here. Guess what? I know that all of the Grass starters so far have been reptiles, etc., etc.. And if I wanted to make all of my Grass starters reptiles (some of mine are and some aren't), I would've done it long before now and without you telling me that I'm creating my own regions "wrong". I know people generally mean well when they say things like that, but with all due respect these designs and regions are mine, not yours, and I can do whatever I like with them. There are times when I like to make regions that build on Nintendo's traditions, but other times I feel like that limits my creativity and so I choose to selectively ignore a few things where it suits me. Besides, what's the harm in changing things up for fun every once in a while?
(I honestly don't understand why Nintendo seems to think that reptilian creatures are more "qualified" to be Grass starters anyway... man, if a fifth gen really is due soon I sure as heck hope the Grass starter is a bunny or something, just to get all the hardcore traditionalists to loosen up a little. :/ )
[/endrant]
The designs are pretty much finalized, so I'm not looking for input on those, either (unless I specifically post a WIP and ask for suggestions on it). Any constructive criticism about the quality of the art itself (i.e. "the light source is coming from the wrong direction on that one's left horn", "the colors are a smidge too bright", etc.), however, is welcome, encouraged and much appreciated. :)
Anyway! Enough of my inane ramblings. Let's move on to those fake pokeymans, shall we?
I've been attempting to emulate Ken Sugimori's style in my most recent fakemon art, at least to a degree. Obviously I'm not stellar at it yet, and nothing like, say, comfy_cushion or the other great Sugi emulators out there, but I'm satisfied with some of them. Others... not so much, partially due to the fact that I'm still learning and partially because some of the inked scans were much, much too small and ended up with massive, slightly messy lineart. Oh, well, I've learned my lesson about tiny pictures now.
Right, so. The first batch we have here is a group of Pokémon from the fanregion I'm spending most of my time on right now, New Logora.
NL-003 Bossorna (Grass/Poison)
New Logora's final stage Grass starter (I'm still working on the basic and the stage one). It's a creative reinterpretation of a bullthorn acacia tree--more bull and thorn than tree, obviously. Yay for giant angry rampaging hallucinogenic tree cows.
NL-004 Crocoal (Fire)
The Fire starter (and one of the too-small pics with the crap lineart). You can never have too many hyenas, IMO.
NL-005 Feucrota (Fire)
Crocoal's evolution. I'm a little less than thrilled with this pic, and since it's another one of those way-too-small pics I'll probably redo it anyway.
NL-006 Burungin (Fire)
This one, which evolves from Feucrota, is based loosely on Bornu legends of were-hyenas. Burungin itself doesn't shapeshift, but it can cloak itself in flames and manipulate said flames to look like various giant, terrifying fiery things.
NL-007 Spraylet (Water)
Osprey-based Water starter. This one turned out better than most of the others with thick lineart.
NL-008 Pandive (Water/Flying)
Spraylet's evolution. Not much more to say about it.
NL-009 Osgrave (Water/Flying)
And we finish off the starters with the final-stage Water starter, an osprey... gryphon... critter... thing. Meh, who cares, it's awesome.
NL-012 Icauriole (Normal/Flying)
The final stage of New Logora's early birds, which have not been designed as of yet aside from Icauriole itself. A little dark, but meh. Orioles are pretty birds.
I have more that are ready to display, but I think that's plenty long enough for now. I'll post the others later, and then any others I happen to finish.
...I talk too much.
