Ok, I have noticed this thing about the zodiac starter, thing, going on. I really want to prove something. This is a bit like a, rant.

Every instruction booklet, online pokedex, pokedex, book, info website and person i know classifies. It as a fire mouse. And let me say this.

Its design is based off of a encha-whatever and it has no relation to a rat. Where it says rat, I want to know.

Here is the challenge. I want someone to try to figure out what he is. The winner gets a pokemon character, made by you, into my ongoing fan-fic on deviant art. I really want to solve this, come on, you all do. So lets work togther and figure out what they are based off of.

Thank you.
Based on what an echidna looks like, it matches perfectly. It has the snout; the general shape; and the fire, which represents an echidna's spikes. The only correlation that I see between it and a mouse, is that it is skinny. That's pretty much it though, because it has no tail, no long teeth, no whiskers, and no beady little eyes. Perhaps it is described in pokedexs as a mouse because Nintendo didn't expect people to pick up on anything, as well as to keep with the zodiac thing.
I personally don't believe in the zodiac thing. I believe that the grass is always a reptile, the fire is a, I don't know and the water, a water thing.

I really don't get how it is based aff of an echina, but it is classified as a mouse.
It's an echidna. Its species is the Fire Mouse Pokémon, but in appearance it's based wholly on the echidna. :)
I think it's not exactly an echidna, the quills are closer to those of porcupines and hedgehogs even. But it's mostly an echidna, yes.
I wonder how Typhlosion is based off of one then? Hmmm..., pokemon is a world of mystery. I wonder what the water starters are based off of.

Typhlosion isn't based on an echidna - it's based on a wolverine, both in its appearance and in the fact that it can walk on both its hind legs and on all fours.
SkyShaymin: Mudkip is a Mudskipper, by the way ;)
Looks more like a dog thingey... I wonder what the theme of all the starters are?
bulbasaur-dinosaur
charmander-lizard of some kind
chicorita-dinosaur(seen in its evolutions)
treeko-gecko
torchic-bird
mudkip-mudpuppy(a kind of salamander)
turtwig-turtle
chinchar-.....do i really need to tell you? if so, it's a monkey

i hope that i cleared up some mysteries
