When signing up at any forum, you want to make a good first impression. Part of that is choosing a sensible, non-nooby username that doesn't give out the air of a noob. For example:
Which of these names seems the least like a noob?
a) [removed]
b) [removed]
c) [removed]
d) [removed]
e) [removed]
That's right, C! Why?
1) Real name and numbers are not good. (A)
2) No spacing and a topic related to the forum's main topic are not good. (B)
3) ... (D)
4) Fanboyish and has numbers at the end. (No offense meant to Naruto fans.)
A, B, D, and E could be improved to:
a) [removed]
b) [removed]
d) [removed]
e) [removed]
As you can see, a good username:
I have rooted out noobs in the past just by looking at their username. In the Introductions forum, I can actually tell who might be a noob just by looking at usernames. I have even picked out a banned member without ever having heard of him before, just by looking at his username before clicking on the thread link. In short, a good, well-chosen username makes a big differences in terms of first impressions.
One last thing, though. A noobish username does not make one a noob. The next mod at Acanthite may have a username that breaks all the criteria given above, but be an active, contributing member who helps the forum. You can never really tell until you see their posts.
Finally, this guide is mainly for newbies wanting to make a good first impression when they sign up here, or people wanting to change their username. Follow these tips, and part of your good impression is there!

As you can see, a good username:
- Leaves spaces if it's made up of multiple words.
- Is well thought out.
- Does not come across as fanboyish.
- Does not have numbers in its name.
- Does not include your real name.
- Is not excessively long.
- Does not carry a noob's air.
