I really like horror movies, but is it just me, or are people running out of ideas for horror movies? For example, the Halloween 2 remake(unnecessary), from what I saw in the trailer, looked almost nothing like the original except for the fact it takes place in a hospital. Some weird things are:
- His mother talks to him, but she's dead.
- His mask is deformed
I could go on and on about this movie, but that's not what the thread is focused on. So post your thoughts and whatever. :P
I go to horror movies for a good laugh. All of them are comepletely predictable and ive seen more organs than humans have.
Agreed with parson, they are quite funny indeed :P
But, you are rigth horror movies (One of my favourite genres) is getting worse, now you can't found an horror movie with more than 6 points on any type of review.
The fact that almost all the movies have a clitched plots, you know when something is going to "surprise" you and that you know how the movie will end at the beginning show this genre decadency.
Also, I don't like that over-used effects and close-up shots that seem to become a staple of horror movies lately...
Well, one recent horror movie that I actually thought was good was mirrors. It was actually unpredictable, and had a good plot. especially when the girl's reflection actually took off her jaw, and the same thing happened to the actual girl. The ending was also awesome.
Other than that exception, I have to agree. Also...

What!? Older horror movies, yes, newer ones, not so much.
See, this is why you should stick to horror games. Madman chasing you with an axe on fire? Ghost girl popping out of a box? In a movie, lame. In a game, the madman could waste all your ammo and health while you try to find an escape route to avoid that dreaded Game Over, while you won't notice the ghost girl popping out of said box (until you turn the camera and see that she's a foot away from you and ohmygodwhatthehelliswrongwithherfaaaaace!?) unless you happen to be looking at the box or didn't skip the preceding cutscene.
It's not so much the story that's the problem since anything can be made scary*, it's the lack of audience immersion. We get twenty or so minutes of, 'Aw, look at our protagonists and their love lives/family/highschool drama!', a few low level scares, then the Big Bad, and then the sequel where the only survivor from the first one dies in the opening scene.
We can't identify or sympathise with characters that we've seen before, and most people would be bored to death of OMGTEENAGEANGST to the point where once the horror starts, it's more relief (or joy if the protagonists are exceptionally annoying/dumb/less sympathetic then the bad guy) then fear, which doesn't make for a good horror.
There is a definate formula to horror movies, but that's because this formula will almost certainly break even with sales, whereas risking something completely different could leave you bankrupt, and not many distributors or actors would sign up for something like that.
* I challenge you guys to use the following objects to make the scariest story imaginable: perfume, necklace, hammer, and silk. It must include all four. PM me your entry (post it here and die; I will not make another spam thread damnit!) and the winner, if it's within the site rules, gets a Rep point. If not, you get the satisfaction of knowing that you scare the hell out of me
