Blair. President. European Council.

What has the world come to, putting a war criminal at the head of something which one day might rival the power of the USA? Argh!

What are your views?
That's HORRIBLE!!! DX I haven't heard much on the European side, but this is ridiculous. Does Europe REALLY want to have war with a country which has over fourty years of peace, obviously showing by voting for Blair?!
Hell, no! We want him back, he was loads better than the one we're stuck with now!
Gordon Brown: "You might hate me more, but you'll hate my wife less."

I agree with Ciph.
He was a war criminal that lied to the British public though! He spent and spent and spent until there was nothing left to spend, and then right at the moment when everything was about to turn into nothing, he bailed and put Gordon in it.

It's not all Gordon's fault - some of it is, but Blair put him in an irreversible position. Britain, the formerly great world power, is now the only European country not to be out of recession. And that's because of the enormous debt racked up by the Blair government which was supposed to have brought 'fiscal change' to Britain. He was meant to have redesigned Labour, but all he did was bring a moderate version of Conservatism to the nation.

He was a liar, and one who didn't know how to manage finances. This silver tongued liar shouldn't be let anywhere near the Presidency.
^ Hahaha... the same flimsy argument Obama's now-lonely supporters whisper while huddling for warmth.

Who cares what Blair did? Brown should've dug Britain out of that hole. No hole's too deep to escape, Ronald Reagan proved that. The same with Obama. Who cares how many deficits Bush may or may not have had? Obama said he'd fix stuff. Blaming it on his predecessor is no excuse when he said he could fix those problems.

British politics is screwy, what with your socialized healthcare. (Know who Jade Goody was? She died of cervical cancer at a shockingly young age due to failure to keep checkup appointments. Why? She wasn't directly paying for it, so it didn't matter too much to her.) But it seems the Conservatives are the best choice for the UK. After all, Maggie Thatcher was the best, most honest British politician since the Parliament was instituted. The Labour Party is, and will always be, a failure worse than even the Liberals.

By the way, the President of the European Union holds little to no power, so I don't quite understand what the fuss is all about.

Hmm... That's some fairly misguided views you got there. For starters, British Politics is 'different', not 'screwy'.

Secondly if you actually research Jade Goody's story, you'll find that she went for a number of appointments throughout her life, which indicated a number of different possible cancers. So the idea that she would simply forget the fact she was diagnosed with cancer in the past because she didn't have a Receipt, is just ridiculous! The purpose of the NHS is that you shouldn't have to put an exact price on healthcare, as well as to make sure the poorest people in this country have excess to the high standard of healthcare that everyone can benefit from, so problems like Jade's have the potential to flagged up in everyone, not just those who have a large bank account.

Finally, although Margaret Thatcher was the must outspoken and radical Prime Minister we've ever had, 'honest' is the one word I would never associate with her, may I remain you that it was her Conservative Government that set up and gave the go-ahead of institutionalised corruption of the recent uncovered expenses scandal, as a way to pay her cabinet sizeable secret bonuses during deep recession!

Moving onto topic, although the idea of a Brit being first president of the European Council would be nice, and Tony Blair being that person isn't that stupid, he is a man who is universally respected by the majority of nations, was crucial in forging peace in Ireland and implementing equality rights in this country, in his first term, the man did real good.

However I totally agree that taking us into an illegal war and being suspected of giving the go-ahead on torture has blighted any chance of him being appointed, or Britain wanting him as first president of the European Council, the majority of people are down-right angry and with good right to be.
Honestly, I'd say that a Scandinavian leader deserves it more, as year after year, Scandinavia tops the 'Best ______________ in the World" surveys.

Congrats, you've just posted a post that is full of absolute rubbish.

I can't see why America is so dead-set against socialised healthcare. It is the most amazing and brilliant system we have over here, and although you do get places where the budget is rather tight, everything works out in the end, and it means that everybody in the country can get free healthcare. So that means that even a homeless person knocked over in the street would get treated for free, without having to pay the stupid health insurance that you have over in America. You're basically saying 'if you don't have money, you shouldn't be allowed to live'.

Next, you either love or hate the Iron Lady. Personally, I think she was one of the most amazing Prime Ministers we have ever had in this country - she pulled us out of utter crisis with the unions striking whenever, demanding things; the coal and steel businesses failing. She made difficult decisions, but I'd say that she made the right ones, and left us with a strong social and fiscal policy. Until Major and Blair came along and screwed it all up.

And what's this rubbish about the President of the EU having no power? You obviously haven't seen how quickly the Union is moving. It was only 30 years ago that the EU was a few countries that promised to trade with each other. Mark my words, we will have an EU Army and Navy soon, and then we will have fully operational elections for the President. Remember, the President of America wasn't powerful to start with. The Presidency might not be influential at the moment, but once the problems have been settled, the President's power will just grow and grow.
And so it begins. The Czechs have ratified Lisbon, and it becomes law on December 1.
