whew today is the last day to post something on this thread before i get bumped....:D umm how can a robot sign up for a forum? i dont get this whole userbot thing...

The creators program in the field responses for the bot like USERNAME, PASSWORD, and stuff like that. Sometimes they create ones as good enough to read captcha text to put in those. So they set them loose to auto sign up on boards and websites, then go to [usually] something like General chat or anything it picks up. After that it makes a thread, posts its BS spam or advertising....and leaves us to lock and block them.

wow what is the world coming to.... how do u program a bot like that? u gotta be like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs to do that ish.

Actually not really...and you could prolly google a guide to do it. Dont, though.

This threat isn't actually about bots, anyway. It's about actual human beings hired to make accounts and spam.

I changed my email ahead of time to a Yahoo account i set up for exactly this, but I only use it for Acanthite. When I heard previously made accounts were not harmed, I tried to change the account I use back to my Gmail, but it wouldn't let me. Would it be possible to allow people who are already members switch their registered email address to a Gmail one?

Probably not, since GMail is blocked because of the bots.

So you can't build in an exception for users who are already in?

Not without modifying core MyBB files, no, as there's no plugin available for it last time I checked.

Sorry to necropost, but wouldn't this be a better idea than banning Gmail altogether?
