"In an announcement today, the Pokémon Company has revealed that a brand-new Pokémon RPG is set to be released later in this year for the Nintendo DS. Further details are unavailable at this time.

The article mentions that the game or games will feature a brand-new Pokémon and that "everything is planned to be born anew," leading many to believe that these games are the currently hoped for fifth generation of games. This would be an interesting turn for the series to take, as two generations have never shared the primary console; while Generation II could be played on a regular Game Boy it was designed with the Game Boy Color in mind.

The February 2010 edition of CoroCoro, due out in only a few weeks, is set to reveal a "surprising announcement", which could be related to this game, as well as the upcoming Pokémon movie, Phantom Ruler Z. With no Generation V Pokémon yet revealed, this would make for the shortest amount of time between the revelation of a brand-new Pokémon and its debut in the main series. "

Can I hear a woop-woop?

EDIT: "The official site has just updated with some details that a brand new Pokémon game series, perhaps a fifth generation is scheduled for release on the Nintendo DS in 2010 in Japan. Further details on the game series have yet to be announced but the site has stated that it will be an RPG and the press release hinted that new Pokémon were in it. Will this series be a brand new series or the beginning of the fifth generation? We'll bring more as and when Nintendo releases information" - Serebii

"The official Japanese Pokemon website has announced that a new Pokemon RPG will be released for the DS by the end of the year and that it will feature brand new Pokemon. It's the "first new entry" since Diamond and Pearl as the announcement states, meaning it will more than likely be a main game featuring the 5th generation. This will be the first time two generations of Pokemon have been released on the same handheld system (R/B was Gameboy, G/S was Gameboy Color, and R/S was GBA). Bangiras has translated the announcement below:

An entirely new "Pocket Monsters" series is under development for release in 2010

The Pokemon Company (headed by Tsunekazu Ishihara) has announced that the newest work in the Pocket Monsters RPG series (Game Freak, Nintendo) is being developed for the Nintendo DS for release by the end of 2010.

Since its first entry, "Pocket Monsters Red and Green" from 1996, the "Pocket Monsters" series has received high acclaim from customers around the world for its distinctive universe and gameplay that involves communicating between different versions to trade and battle. Sales for the entire series have climbed to over 130,000,000 copies worldwide.

The "Pocket Monsters" series for the Nintendo DS made use of the dual screen, touch screen, and wi-fi connection for play. The latest project under development is a completely new work, coming 4 years after "Pocket Monsters Diamond and Pearl" which boasts worldwide sales of over 17,150,000 copies (over 5,800,000 in Japan). It should make an innovative, fresh start by adding even more new game play and new Pokemon.

Please anticipate a later article with news about the game's content.

As posted earlier, the February 15th issue of CoroCoro is supposed to have a "surprising" announcement related to the 13th Pokemon movie, The Ruler of Illusion: Z. Could it be the revealing of a new 5th generation Pokemon? We'll find out soon!"

It's not necessarily a new generation, it could a huge revival of the series in general, or just a different kind of Pokémon RPG, like the Mystery Dungeon games.

It does say that it includes new Pokémon, though - which would have to be part of a new generation, even if it aint a new main series game.

All too true. Though it could be like Gale of Darkness, which had Bonsly and Munchlax in it.
YES YES YES! I can't wait! Something COMPLETELY NEW!
This new RPG could be the 5th generation, considering the next generation has been released 2 years after the third game in a generation, with the exception of Gold/Silver in regards to Yellow.

Crystal 2000 (Japan), Ruby/Sapphire 2002 (Japan)
Emerald 2004 (Japan), Diamond/Pearl 2006 (Japan)

So if this trend continues:
Platinum 2008 (Japan), Gen V this year (Japan)

That would also mean that it should be released in the US next year.

Still, whatever it is will probably be revealed in the April-June issues of CoroCoro. So, we can only wait.
"Gamefreak director Junichi Masuda has also announced the new game(s) on his blog, linking to the official announcement below [The previous Pokébeach news I showed]. He says that the game(s) are in development right now and that the work is secret. Obviously, whatever they're working on will be the next main titles in the Pokemon franchise." - Pokébeach

If it is Gen V, then it's the first Gen in the franchise to share it's console with another main series game from a previous Gen, in this case, Gen IV.
So long I've been waiting for this moment to come! I wonder how the hypothetically new Pokemon will be...
*is hyped already*

I wonder what they're going to add to the gameplay now. They always introduced a game-changing mechanic:

Gen 2: Items, SpA and SpD instead of Special stat.
Gen 3: Double Battles
Gen 4: Physical/Special attack split.

I am hoping for a mantis shrimp Pokemon.
