They're kind of like a subset of the features of a forum; create one, set it up, and people can join and post in it.

Eh, not sure. On one hand it could make everyone scatter into their own little areas, but on the other it could reinforce friendship groups by promoting common interests. I'm hoping the second will apply, I'm gonna sit back and watch before making an opinion though.
